1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang
This 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang is one of the later production models which can quickly be identified by the wide set driving lights in the grille and the lack of the upper rear scoop mounted brake and turn signal lights. Many Shelby enthusiasts will insist that the outboard mounting position of the driving lights were originally planned for the air-conditioned equipped models, which this is one example, but the vin number confirms its appearance without opening the hood. The big-block GT500 made at least 50 more horsepower than its numerically lesser cousin for just a few hundred dollars more. This 1967 Shelby GT500 Fastback was originally shipped new to the Foreign Car Center in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 19, 1967. Carroll Shelby Motors no. 02714 is listed in the Shelby Registry, comes with its original order form and is presented here following a concours-level restoration for a return to 1967 big-block glory. At the core of the GT500 is the 428-cubic-inch Police Interceptor V-8 engine. Proven as smooth and durable in police fleets, the engine used quiet-running hydraulic lifters and dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors. With dual exhaust the engine was rated for 355 horsepower at 5,400 RPM and 420 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 RPM. The Police Interceptor class V-8 is backed by a 4-speed manual transmission.
Quick-ratio power steering and power brakes with front discs deliver confident handling and maximum road control. In a few short years, the Shelby Mustang evolved from a raw small-block racing car in disguise to a matured but no less formidable road-going American sports car. This GT500 is finished in red with white stripes. The well-appointed black interior features factory-optional Selectaire air conditioning for climate control and folding rear seat for a measure of practical stowage with sport. Optional air conditioning triggered the addition of tinted glass for a glare free view over the louvered hood with integrated turn signal indicators. This Shelby GT500 rides on optional Kelsey-Hayes Mag-Star wheels equipped with Goodyear Speedway 350 speed-rated tires. Shelby number 2714 retains its original window sticker which reveals the car was originally eqipped with an automatic transmission (the car was upgraded to a 4-Speed early in its life) and documents the highly coveted factory-installed air conditioning.
