1970 Hemi Cuda Convertible at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2017

This 1970 Hemi Cuda Convertible quickly caught my eye as I walked into the Salon area of Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2017.  It’s glossy black paint mirrored everyone’s reflection as they walked by.  This 1970 Hemi Cuda Convertible is familiar to me as it was previously shown at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in the Class of 1970 Invitational Display.  It is one of only nine Hemi Cuda Convertibles equipped with a Torqueflite automatic transmission and it is an former NHRA Drag car.

This 1970 Hemi Cuda Convertible was sold new in Marietta, Georgia and it was initially street-driven until it was repossessed.  It was then purchased by the Bowers brothers and with the help of friend Stewart Way, it was ultimately turned into a race car by Barnett Automotive in Georgia. It was raced as a ’71 model because a more favorable weight factor rule would create a competitive edge for this Hemi Cuda Convertible.

It was later owned by NHRA Hall of Fame inductee Steve Bagwell and driven by NHRA Hall of Fame inductee Terry Earwood during which time it set national records for both Elapsed Time and Mile Per Hour in the NHRA and the IHRA.  In 1973, it won the Super Stock Eliminator title at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.  During these racing years, it was painted in an expensive custom paint job and it ended up winning twenty seven races in the 1973 season.  Once its competitive days were over, it was sold and didn’t surface again for over a decade.

It’s now been beautifully restored, and as with most former racing cars, it is currently powered by a date code correct 426 Hemi engine.  The crowds at Barrett-Jackson enjoyed seeing this rare 1970 Hemi Cuda Convertible, and although it may not have sold in Scottsdale, it is still available and would be the perfect centerpiece for any serious Muscle Car collection!
