1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6
This 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 has its original drivetrain since it was new! It has a 454 LS6 engine that is matched up to an M22 heavy duty Rock Crusher 4-speed transmission both of which are numbers matching to this Chevelle! Even more, it has two factory build sheets to prove its authenticity! Mecum Auctions had this car listed and here’s what they had to say about it:
Built at the Baltimore, Maryland, assembly plant and delivered new to Cordia Chevrolet in Clymer, New York, this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6 retains its original driveline and sheet metal and has been comprehensively restored to exacting standards.
The LS6-powered SS 454 was the ultimate Chevelle, boasting the largest displacement and the highest horsepower rating of any regular-production Chevrolet ever built to its time, giving it lasting status as the premier American muscle car of the classic era. At the heart of this machine is the famous 454/450 HP LS6 big-block engine packing a forged steel crank and rods and 11.25:1 forged aluminum pistons. An 800 CFM Holley 4-barrel mounted on a voluminous aluminum intake, Chevrolet’s hottest solid-lifter camshaft and high-flow closed-chamber heads combined to produce colossal power. Its factory rating of 450 horsepower at 5,600 RPM was considerably less than the actual figure of approximately 500, and it generated an incredible 500 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 RPM.
Endowed with the restrained yet athletic styling that was typical of late-‘60s GM design under Bill Mitchell’s leadership, this handsome 1970 SS 454 LS6 coupe was restored to its original specifications as a highly purposeful example of the breed. It is finished in correct Desert Sand over the original sheet metal and features a complementary Saddle Tan bench-seat interior. The original matching-numbers drivetrain combines the LS6 engine—complete with Air Injection Reactor emission controls—with a Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed manual transmission and code-G80 Positraction rear end with 4.10:1 gearing.
Additionally optioned with power brakes with front discs, cowl-induction hood with hold-down pins, electric clock and AM radio with windshield antenna, the car’s black Sport Stripes, 5-spoke SS wheels and Firestone Wide Oval tires are also correct and as original. Documentation includes two factory build sheets and an LS6 Registry Certificate.
